What Are Implant Dentures?

A traditional denture sits directly on the gums and is held in place with natural suction. In contrast, implant dentures are attached to dental implant posts that have been surgically placed in strategic parts of the jawbone. The posts act as artificial roots that prevent your replacement teeth from slipping when you’re speaking or chewing.

Implant dentures come in two main varieties: fixed and removable. Here’s a brief look at the differences between these options.

Fixed/Permanent Implant Dentures

A fixed denture stays in the mouth 24/7 and can only be taken out by a dental expert. They often need about four to eight implant posts to hold them in place. Many patients find implant dentures convenient since they can be brushed and flossed as if they were a natural part of the mouth.

Removable Implant Dentures

A removable implant denture can be taken out of your mouth whenever you want. Since removable implant dentures require fewer implant posts than fixed ones (about two to five in many cases), they can be a good option for patients who have lost bone density in their jaws. One advantage of a removable implant denture is that you can clean the area underneath it more easily.

The Implant Denture Process

We will need to confirm that you’re able to get dental implants during an initial consultation. Additionally, sometimes bone grafting and other preliminary procedures will need to be performed to ensure that you’re a viable dental implant candidate.

Once the necessary preparations are complete, the implant posts can be placed in your jaw via surgery. A natural process called osseointegration will allow the posts to fuse with the jawbone, eventually reaching the point where abutments can be attached. Then your final denture will be designed based on impressions of your mouth and eventually anchored to the implant posts with the help of the abutments.

Am I a Candidate for Implant Dentures?

You could be a potential candidate for implant dentures if:

  • You have lost most or all of your teeth in one or both arches.
  • You do not currently have gum disease.
  • You have a sufficient level of bone density in your jaw for dental implant surgery.
  • You can commit to practicing excellent oral hygiene every day.

Of course, the best way to know for sure if implant dentures are right for you is to schedule a consultation with our team so that we can take a look at your mouth and learn more about your situation.
